Gratiot County, Michigan - cougar sighting.
Reported Wed, Sep 26, 2012 at 5:43 PM to www.savethecougar.org
Date of Observation: 09-26-12
Time: 12:50
County: Gratiot
Sighting Description:
My wife and I were returning to our house, after my VA appointment and I had picked her up from her mothers home. We were going home to pick our daughter up to take her to work. As we got close to the drive way, my wife yelled, what is that, and pointed toward the ditch just before our driveway. As I looked, I saw the shape of an animal moving into the field, that at first, I didn't recognize. Once the animal moved out into the field more, I recognized it as a Cougar. We did not pull into our drive, but followed on the road for a good 200 yards. It was carrying an animal (somebody's animal) in its mouth. It didn't run across the field, just moved at a steady lope. The animal it was carrying was about the size of a small dog or big cat. We couldn't tell. I and my wife saw this cougar and reported it immediately to the Gratiot County Sheriffs Office. I told them they would probably think I was nuts, but we had just seen a cougar. I described the animal to the individual on the phone and told him. "I know its a cougar, because I saw it tail..it wasn't a dog." The dispatchers were supposed to contact the Michigan DNR..but I really don't know if they did. We got a good look at the animal and it was not a large house cat nor a dog..The animal was about 100lbs to 150lbs.
